Electron Microscopy & Histology Core Laboratory

The Electron Microscopy & Histology Core Laboratory is located in CB 1113 in the Carl Sanders Research and Education building. The home page and details of Histology Core are located here. The Core is supported by the Department of Cellular Biology and Anatomy at the Medical College of Georgia and user fees. The core is available to all Medical College of Georgia affiliated investigators and off-campus investigators.

The mission of the Electron Microscopy Core is to provide high quality ultrastructural analysis at an affordable cost to research investigators at the Medical College of Georgia and external research facilities. We accomplish this mission in several ways. The Core is well equipped and offers a variety of specimen preparation services for transmission and scanning electron microscopy. The Electron Microscopy Core is a full service facility and most users have the Core staff perform all aspects of the ultrastructural procedures from specimen processing to imaging. To these users the Core is an extension of their own research laboratory and augments their primary research expertise by providing expensive, specialized equipment and experienced technical staff to perform ultrastructural analyses. Trained and experienced Core users may perform much of the preparatory work and utilize the Core’s instrumentation and electron microscopes. The Core staff will train faculty and students in any or all ultrastructural techniques offered by the facility.

We encourage all users, but particularly new users, to contact the staff to discuss the objectives and requirements of the ultrastructural studies they intend to conduct before embarking on those studies. During the initial consultation the staff and investigator will discuss the investigator’s objectives, the respective responsibilities of the investigator and the Core staff in accomplishing the work, the methods to be used, a time frame in which the ultrastructural results could be completed, and the potential cost of the studies.
