Program Objectives

The Georgia AHEC system's goal is to increase access to primary care services in rural and urban underserved areas through the recruitment, training and retention of primary care health professionals. The AHEC is an educational program for the health professions with specific objectives:

1. Recruit students from underserved, remote, rural, inner city and minority communities into primary health care fields, including medicine, nursing, social work, allied health and other health professions.

2. Train students in primary health care professions in community based sites throughout both rural and urban underserved communities and expose those students to the needs, challenges and career opportunities in these medically underserved areas.

3. Increase the availability of continuing education programs, library and information resources and other means of assisting isolated health care practitioners to stay current in their respective fields.

4. Identify the most cost effective strategies to address the needs of health professions as prioritized by regions. This includes analysis of workforce data, focused utilization of existing resources and the development of working partnerships and collaborations.
